A little bit about Hugh Helms and Family
Alumni Business Spotlight Helms Garden Shop and Nursery
Story by OPSU Alumni and Friends
Helms Nursery was founded in 1992 when Hue and Anita moved to the Helms family farm north of Goodwell with their children. They began their business as a small, one greenhouse bedding plant grower who sold to local feed stores. The business grew and currently serves the surrounding area with bedding plants, flowers, perennials, farm grown produce and garden supplies at the Guymon garden center – Helms Garden Shop!
The whole family has had a part in growing the business. Hue graduated in 1985 from OPSU with an Industrial Arts major. His degree expanded his knowledge and interest in construction and technical operations which keep the greenhouses running! Anita graduated from OPSU in 1985 with an English degree….go figure. The general knowledge and critical thinking skills have certainly helped with running a business. Their three children – Ben, Kayla and Rachel – have been involved from their early years with the farming and flower growing business. Ben graduated from OPSU with a degree in Biology and Fire Science. He lent his hand at landscaping and building construction throughout the years. Kayla, also an OPSU graduate with an Art degree has become the backbone of the flower growing operation. Rachel Scott graduated from OPSU with an English degree and works as the social media implementer while helping out during the busy spring and summer season in the nursery and at the garden center.
OPSU is more than a place, a school, a job, or an education. OPSU is home for the Helms family.
