Livin’ Green
Before 2009, residents of the Texas County community had to drive to neighboring states to participate in races. Livin’ Green decided to change that and created the Livin’ Green Run/Walk. “The first year we had such an overwhelming response,” says Rick Roberts, Race Director. “This activity creates a social environment with a splash of fun, education, and health.”
The race’s mission is to help participants make today the first day of the rest of their lives. “The event reminds individuals that change is possible, but we each have to take the first step, then follow it with a second,” says Roberts. Through the generosity of the race partners and sponsors, Livin’ Green has became a signature event for the community. “We have all kinds of individuals participate in Livin’ Green, from mothers pushing strollers to kids with pets, to amateur athletes to marathoners,” says Roberts.
Since its inception, the Livin’ Green Run/Walk has proudly partnered with the Guymon Community Enrichment Foundation (GCEF) to safeguard and responsibly manage its funds. Over the years, the race proceeds have been reinvested back in the local community in a number of charitable projects, including Leadership Guymon, Heritage Community, OPSU Scholarship, Guymon Fire Department, Texas County Elder Fair, Oaks of Mamre, Panhandle Nutrition, Main Street Guymon, and others.
The event also reminds particpants that “living green” should be reflected in mind, body, environment, and community. “Today, we are seeing a more health-driven local business community, as they have begun sponsoring employee teams of runners and walkers,” says Roberts.
